Stephen M. writes: Hello, I just wanted to explain my run-in with spirit airlines and do whatever I can to watch this company file chapter 11.
My girlfriend and I booked an all-inclusive in Mexico for a week June 1-5. We flew from Cleveland via Southwest Airlines to Fort Lauderdale, Florida (Spirit's Hub Airport apparently) on May 31st and were set to fly to Cancun at 8:40am the following day. We arrived at the airport at 6:00AM and had to check in at the airport because Spirit's website wouldn't accept my passport information, so of course they had to charge me full price for bags ($260 for 1 checked and 2 carry on, round trip). I was irritated but it wasn't the end of the world.
After checking in, I then find out that our flight is delayed until 12:40PM ... even more irritated at this point, but it's the airlines so whatever. My girlfriend and I did some shopping at the duty-free store where I heard an airport employee say to the store clerk "keep an eye on the Cancun flight."
I asked the clerk what that was about but he feigned ignorance, so I then went to the Spirit customer service desk. I asked her what was going on with the flight, and she said weather issues, but not to worry.
I had my girlfriend (a travel agent) call and check the weather and what do ya know: clear and sunny all the way through. After 2 more BS delays I get an alert on my phone that our flight is cancelled. So I go back up to the desk and ask the same lady. She assures me it is a mistake and the flight will be leaving momentarily. 20 minutes later ... the announcement is made ... cancelled.
We are then forced to march back to the baggage claim and wait an hour in line for what they call "rebooking" ... what a joke. I approached the counter, level headed and respectful allowing the service agent to speak first and saying please and thank you. She offered me 2 options. either:
1) a full refund or 2) to send us to Cancun Thursday (4 days into our 5 day stay).
I informed her i booked through a travel agent so a refund would take more than 60 days to get back to me, so these options were unacceptable. She replies, "Well that is all I have to offer you, because we have no other flights leaving until Thursday."
I asked if they were willing to cover the difference on a flight leaving from Miami if I could find my own transportation down there. Her response was, "Absolutely not. We don't offer that, no airline offers that."
At this point, seeing I was getting nowhere I spent $1300 on a flight out of Miami and took an hour train ride down from Fort Laurderdale to catch that flight. I did not leave without telling a few Spirit employees how I truly felt in a completely ignorant expletive-filled rant that got me nowhere, but made me feel a little better.
All I can say is unless you wanna pay an extra $1300 for a different flight, dont fly spirit. After baggage fees you don't save money anyway.
