Marc writes: My fiancée and I arrived at LGA on 11/7/12 about a quarter of 8 in the morning. We were booked on Spirit Airlines flight 847, departing at 8:35AM, arriving at ORD at 10:01AM.
When we arrived at LGA, we checked in at the Spirit desk and were informed that our small rollerboards would have to be checked. We were not given the option to carry them on. We were charged $45 each for this. We then walked the bags to the nearby TSA checked luggage receiving area and gave them to the agent. That was the last we saw of them until Chicago.
Inside that luggage, my fiancée had a bunch of gifts for my family, gifts we had purchased in China and carefully brought to the States so they would be in mint condition. One of those was a beautiful set of $400 “Beats Pro by Dre” headphones for my sister, bought brand-new 2 weeks prior and of course never used.
At baggage claim in O’Hare airport, we both noticed that our bags were different, the zippers were in different places and in the case of my bag a ring I used to keep the zippers together had been pried apart. We inspected our luggage and found that both bags had been rifled through, and two items were actually missing from her bag.
Someone had gone into her bag, torn open the box for the headphones, and taken the headphones and cables out of the packaging and put just the empty box back into the luggage! A pair of black stockings were also missing from her bag, I suspect left behind in the thief’s rush.
We filed a report with Spirit immediately while at O’Hare (incident# ORDNK00116413), but Spirit has shown an entirely callous attitude towards the whole thing, to the extent that for all intents and purposes, they are complicit in the crime and behaving as an agent of whatever employee actually committed the theft.
They also make you go online, fill out the same report again and mail (faxing not allowed) to them. They replied that their contract of carriage lets them steal electronics, jewelry, and other valuables without consequence.
Feel free to share the story - the bottom line is - your luggage WILL be rifled through any anything might be stolen by Spirit Air. Don't let it out of your sight!
